The Distinctive Allure of Vransko Lake

There are few places in the world with the unique history and natural wonders of Vransko Lake. With historical cities on either side of the lake, Vransko is steeped with history. However, it was the natural splendor of the area that had it set apart as a Natural Park in 1999. It is the largest natural lake in Croatia, located in the southern area of Dalmatia.

Visitors can expect as much natural beauty as historical interest in this park. Ruins dating back to the Roman era can be found here, including an aqueduct, which suggest the area was used as a farming community. The aqueduct would have been used to supply surrounding towns with water taken from the lake, which is a flooded valley and a cryptodepression, supplied with some natural springs to keep it fresh. Other cultures, such as the Turks, have used Vransko as a key source of water, settling the nearby areas.

The reason people have always been drawn to Vransko Lake is without a doubt its natural appeal. In addition to being the largest natural lake in all of Croatia, it is also a very unique lake. Due to the way it was formed, there are many underwater crevices, some of which even connect to the nearby Adriatic sea. Because of this, sometimes the water may appear to be a slightly different color.

People are not the only ones drawn to this natural wonder. Animals have also flocked to this area, including some endangered species of birds. In fact, a section of the lake was declared a special preserve in 1983 and under the criteria of the European Union, the lake is also considered an Important Bird Area.

Trips to Vransko Lake Nature Park can take advantage of the natural areas with hikes, bike trails, or boat excursions. Fisherman may also enjoy the noted freshwater fishing that can be done all year at the park. Campers are also welcome to enjoy the area.

Vransko Lake Nature Park is an easy trip to make from Pakostane or Prosika with a main road leading to the park.
